| Hello... |
|
Most days we focus upon the small ups and downs of life, family problems, work hassles, health issues. Sometimes we experiences tragedy, such as the death or serious illness of a loved one and we grieve within our group of family and friends. But one of the greatest disasters Australia has ever experienced, occurred a few weeks ago in Victoria. It was a firebombing of people, wildlife and bush by nature, poor prevention and faulty government planning. Everyone knows someone who has been affected. It is a communal tragedy.

How does one cope? The challenge is not about what happens to you but how you deal with it.
- Deal with one day at a time.
- Remain in the present.
- Smile at little things when possible.
Invest in the common pool of friendship and withdraw to find time alone when you feel the need.

Last year I was called into an organization where there was bullying and a toxic culture. I spoke to the group about bullying in general and later interviewed every employee. Clearly bullying had occurred, everyone was affected, targets, bullies and witnesses. Then we met again. I summarised my findings, the bullying had been occurring and was hurting everyone.
No one was blamed or shamed. Then we divided into groups to discuss how the company could change and become collaborative, respectful and productive. They have since moved on. This is a far better approach than biased investigations, unequal mediations, brain drain and incompetent, toxic cultures.

At times like this we realise that people who relate well to other people receive more support from the common pool of human kindness and caring. These people cope better socially, are more successful at work and have happier families. The secret is their ability to communicate clearly and effectively their thoughts and feelings. Some people find these skills naturally; others learn how to develop them.
In 2009 I will be joining Barbara John, an international voice and speech educator, to present "Workplaces that Work". Barbara conducts training in voice improvement and communication skills for corporations. She is on the panel of Drama and Speech Examiners for Trinity College, London.
