I recently met Professor Philip Zimbardo again. He is known for many different areas of psychology but especially the prison experiment (1970's). He believes that we all have the capacity to be good like Mother Teresa, or evil like Suddam Hussein. It depends on where we are, not who we are. The line between good and evil is not fixed. Sadly good people do behave in evil ways and he challenges onlookers who enable evil to occur.

He regards heroism as the antidote to evil. When the opportunity comes to support, care or protect someone else, some people answer the call. They take a risk and stand up for what's right, such as confronting bullying or whistle blowing. Although some people are real heroes, like Mandela, others can become ordinary heroes. Instead of remaining silent, people should stand up for the innocent or vulnerable. Though it's safer to do this in a small group, not alone. Though their journey is not easy, the ordinary hero makes our world a better place.
